Meeting Briefs: Mokena Park District Board of Commissioners for June 27, 2023
The Mokena Park District Board of Commissioners met on June 27 to approve funding for capital projects, renew a regional partnership agreement, and review staff reports on recent and upcoming activities.
The board approved a $550,000 fund transfer to the Capital Projects Fund for several key improvements. The money will be used for projects not completed last fiscal year, including a new bathroom at Hecht Park, the replacement of Manchester Cove Playground, and repairs to the Buske Park path and Hecht Park parking lot.
Mokena joined eight other park districts in approving an intergovernmental agreement to continue funding for the Lincolnway Special Recreation Association (LWSRA). The agreement ensures member districts will help fund capital projects at the LWSRA facility in New Lenox, which provides recreational programs for individuals with disabilities across the region.
The park district is seeking a $946,500 state grant to help fund a major renovation of the Yunker Park Barn. The project aims to convert the structure into a year-round facility for programs and meetings. The grant would cover approximately half of the total estimated cost of the renovation.
Facility Upgrades: A new HVAC system is scheduled for installation at the Administration Center on July 13, replacing a unit that is over 30 years old. A new card reader system for the Mokena Dog Park is also expected to be installed soon. Work has also started on a new story path between the recreation center and playground.
Recreation Program Updates: The park district’s spring soccer season, a cooperative effort with Manhattan Park District, recently concluded with 290 players participating. The district also hosted a successful free pickleball program on June 3 that drew 34 participants. Summer camp programs, which began on June 5, have seen strong enrollment across all age groups.
Staff Recognitions: The board offered congratulations to Superintendent of Recreation Kara Jelderks and her husband Brett Bartnik on the birth of their son. Congratulations were also extended to Recreation Supervisor Skyler Ramberger and Molly Ramberger on their recent marriage.
Upcoming Events: The district is preparing for its Fourth of July festivities, with fireworks planned for July 2 at Main Park and parade participation on July 4. Other upcoming events include National Night Out on August 1 and the Farm and Barn Fest on August 12.
