Meeting Briefs: Mokena Village Board for July 14, 2025
The Mokena Village Board on July 14 approved a major overhaul of its zoning code, awarded a contract for a significant storm sewer project, and heard plans for a new fiber internet provider to enter the village.
In a move to improve clarity for residents and contractors, the board unanimously passed an ordinance to streamline regulations for accessory structures like pools, sheds, and decks. The changes consolidate scattered rules into a single, user-friendly table and clarify definitions for materials like masonry.
The board also awarded a contract for over $472,000 to Arriba Construction & Supply of Mokena to replace storm sewers in the Countryview Estates subdivision. The work is necessary to address drainage issues ahead of a planned road resurfacing project in the neighborhood.
In other business, officials heard a presentation from Pavlov Media, a Champaign-based internet company that intends to build a new fiber optic network in Mokena, promising to bring more competition and high-speed options to residents. The company has already begun similar projects in several nearby communities.
The meeting also featured a lengthy celebration of the village’s successful Independence Day events, with the Chamber of Commerce presenting awards to the winners of the July 4th Parade.
New Police Vehicles Purchased
As part of its approval of $2,985,088 in monthly accounts payable, the Village Board authorized a payment of $222,817 to Currie Motors of Frankfort. The payment covers the purchase of three new police SUVs and two additional Ford Explorer SUVs for other village department use.
Softball Star Honored
The board issued a formal proclamation recognizing Mokena resident and Lincoln-Way Central High School student Lisabella Dmitrijevic. She was honored for being named the Gatorade Illinois Softball Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. As part of her award, Dmitrijevic selected the Mokena Baseball Softball Association to receive a “Play It Forward” community grant from Gatorade.
New Hearing Officer Appointed
The board approved the appointment of John Z. Toscas to serve as the village’s Administrative Hearing Officer. The officer is responsible for presiding over the administrative adjudication process for various village code violations, including those related to building, zoning, and parking.
Sewer Connection Approved
The board approved a routine right-of-way use agreement for the installation of a private sewer connection for the property located at 20401 Plattner Court. The consent agenda item passed without discussion.
