Village of Mokena Board of Trustees Meeting | October 27, 2025

The Mokena Village Board took major action on finances and public safety during its meeting on Monday, October 27, 2025, approving a half-percent sales tax increase and enacting a comprehensive new ordinance to regulate e-bikes, scooters, and golf carts. The sales tax hike, effective in 2026, will raise the village’s rate to 8% and is intended to create a stable funding source for water and sewer infrastructure. In response to a surge in safety concerns, the board also passed new rules for e-vehicles, establishing age limits and supervision requirements for young e-bike riders and setting clear guidelines for the use of scooters and golf carts on village streets. Veterans Garage Chili Cookoff Announced
Jim Roberts, a volunteer with Joe Werner’s Veterans Garage, invited the community to the organization’s Chili Cookoff on November 15 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the American Legion in New Lenox. The event, a revival of a popular Mokena tradition, serves as a fundraiser for the veterans’ support group. A $10 entry fee includes a hot dog, chips, and samples of 20-30 different chilies.

Proclamation for National Family Literacy Day
The board issued a proclamation recognizing November 1, 2025, as National Family Literacy Day. The proclamation, accepted by a representative of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, highlights the importance of reading for the entire family and supports programs aimed at increasing literacy for both children and adults.

Wolf Road Special Use Permit Approved
The board approved a special use permit for the property at 19906 Wolf Road, Unit B. The action serves as a “clean-up” to align the property’s zoning with its historical use. The permit will allow future tenants to operate an auto repair facility or a contractor’s trade office with outdoor storage, consistent with previous businesses at the location.

Crossfit Rua Gets Special Use Permit
A special use permit for commercial indoor recreation was granted to Crossfit Rua, allowing the high-intensity workout facility to operate at 18811 S. 90th Avenue, Unit B. The permit was approved with the stipulation from the Plan Commission that the business must install soundproofing to prevent amplified music from disturbing adjacent commercial tenants.

Wastewater Plant Engineering Contract Awarded
The board authorized a professional engineering services agreement with Strand Associates, Inc. for up to $45,000. The firm will provide construction-related services, including project management and site supervision, for the 2025 Wastewater Treatment Plant SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system upgrade project. The total construction cost for the project is approximately $1.3 million.

Deputy Chief Recognized for Executive Training
Police Chief Brian Benton recognized Deputy Chief Bob Wilford for recently completing the intensive three-week Executive Management Program at Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety. Benton highlighted the accomplishment and praised Wilford’s performance in the program, which is aimed at developing upper-level police management.

Halloween Safety Reminders
With Halloween approaching on Friday, multiple trustees and Mayor George J. Metanias urged residents to be cautious. They reminded drivers to watch for trick-or-treaters, who will be out from 3 to 7 p.m., and encouraged homeowners to turn on outdoor lights to improve visibility. Residents not participating can place a “no trick-or-treating” sign on their door.
