Mokena School District 159 Meeting | November 19, 2025

The Mokena School District 159 Board of Education met on November 19, 2025, where they reviewed strong state assessment scores and approved a tentative 2025 tax levy that will require a public hearing. The board heard a detailed presentation showing Mokena students significantly outperforming state averages in ELA, Math, and Science on new baseline tests. All three district schools earned “Commendable” ratings from the state. For more information, see the full article on the district’s academic performance.

The board also gave initial approval to a $22.5 million tax levy, a 5.88% increase over the prior year’s extension. This triggers a “Truth in Taxation” hearing scheduled for December 17. Other major actions included approving a $190,000 transfer from the working cash fund to support operations and capital projects, and accepting over $8,000 in donations from the Mokena PTA for student enrichment. News Briefs

8th Grade Science Novel Adopted
The board approved the novel “Frankenstein’s Cat: Cuddling Up to Biotech’s Brave New Beasts” for the 8th-grade science curriculum. The book had been on public display since the October meeting. The motion passed with one abstention from board member Kelli MacMillan, who cited unfamiliarity with the process of approving curriculum mid-year.

District to Seek ISBE Maintenance Grant
The board gave the administration approval to apply for the 2026 Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Maintenance Grant. The grant, which requires a local match, would provide $50,000 to support a roof project planned for next summer.

Crossing Guard Honored for 40 Years of Service
Crossing guard Kay Oehmen was recognized for her 40 years of service to the Mokena community. Oehmen began her role in 1985, ensuring the safety of Mokena students. While she was unable to attend the meeting, the board expressed its gratitude for her long and dedicated service.

Communications Award Received
The district received an Award of Merit from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association (INSPRA). The award was for the social media campaign highlighting the district’s Strategic Plan. Superintendent Robert Gurney noted that Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kristin Johnson spearheaded the effort on top of her regular duties.

Personnel Report Approved
The board approved the personnel report, which included the resignations of maintenance staff member Matthew Henneman and bus driver Natasha Hurst. New hires included Leah Frericks as a Lunch Supervisor at MIS, Ruben Cruz in Maintenance, and a list of 17 substitutes for various positions across the district.

Meeting Minutes Approved Over Objection
The minutes from the October 15 meeting were approved in a 6-1 vote. Trustee Kelli MacMillan voted no, stating the minutes lacked sufficient detail regarding board discussions, which she argued is inconsistent with board policy. Superintendent Robert Gurney acknowledged her concern.

Transportation Returning to 10 Routes
The transportation department is preparing to return to operating ten full bus routes following the Thanksgiving break. The expansion is expected to restore normal drop-off times and improve overall efficiency. The district also welcomed new driver Gayle Enright and recognized team members Jimmie Leitl and Fred Lovingfoss for their service in the U.S. Army.

Student and Staff Recognitions
The board spotlighted seven students from the Advanced Learners ELA program, who presented a reader’s theater and TED Talks. Additionally, Nurse Therese was named this month’s “Reel Champion” for her vigilance in identifying and reporting phishing attempts.
