Mokena Village Board Meeting | November 24, 2025

Article Summary: The Mokena Village Board approved a five-year agreement with Axon Enterprise on Monday, Nov. 24, 2025, to provide the police department with the latest Taser 10 conducted energy weapons. The $51,317 contract will be significantly offset by a $21,600 state grant.

Axon Taser Agreement Key Points:

  • Enhanced Safety: The Taser 10 model features a range of 45 feet, nearly doubling the range of previous models to allow more space for de-escalation.

  • Capacity: The new devices carry 10 single-probe cartridges, providing officers with up to nine opportunities to achieve a successful connection.

  • Grant Funding: A $21,600 reimbursement grant from the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS) will cover nearly half the total cost.

  • Trade-In: The village will receive a $1,000 buyback credit for its current inventory of X26P Tasers.

The Mokena Police Department is set to upgrade its defensive equipment following a board vote on Monday, Nov. 24, 2025. Chief of Police Brian Benton recommended the transition to the Taser 10 system, noting that the department’s current X26P models have reached the end of their recommended five-year useful life.

“The Taser 10 is designed for greater de-escalation time and features individual probe targeting,” Benton explained. He noted that the new technology allows for more precise deployment and neuromuscular incapacitation regardless of distance, up to the 45-foot range.

The board authorized a five-year contract totaling $51,317.14. Due to the specialized nature of the equipment, the board voted to waive standard bidding requirements. The first year of the contract will cost the village approximately $10,656 after applying the $21,600 ILEAS grant and the trade-in credit. The remaining four years will consist of annual payments of $4,765.29. Benton noted that most neighboring agencies have already transitioned to the Taser 10 system.
