Mokena Community Park District Board Meeting | October 2025

Article Summary: Park commissioners reviewed a proposal to significantly enhance the 2026 Independence Day fireworks display to celebrate the nation’s semiquincentennial.

Fireworks Key Points:

  • The Occasion: The show would mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 3, 2026.

  • The Proposal: An enhanced display featuring 830 additional blasts during a five-minute high-impact segment.

  • Cost Sharing: Any additional costs for the upgraded show would be shared equally between the Park District and the Village of Mokena.

The Mokena Community Park District Board on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, began discussions on how to mark a historic milestone during the July 2026 celebrations.

Executive Director Greg Vitale presented a memo outlining an “enhanced” fireworks display for the event scheduled for July 3, 2026. The proposal aims to celebrate the United States’ semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) with a one-time expansion of the standard 24-minute show.

The proposed addition would “sandwich” the standard show with two patriotic segments. The opening set would feature 296 continuous blasts of red, white, and blue fireworks lasting two minutes. The closing set would include 534 continuous blasts lasting three minutes.

“The additional proposal includes a staggering 830 blasts in approximately 5 minutes, which is a far greater ratio than the impressive grand finale in the standard show,” Vitale wrote in the memo.

The item was presented for discussion only, and no formal vote was taken Tuesday.
