Mokena Fire Protection District Meeting | Nov. 11, 2025

The Mokena Fire Protection District Board of Trustees met on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, to handle financial levies, facility maintenance, and personnel changes. In addition to passing a 2.98% tax levy increase and approving facility repairs, the board finalized the hiring of a new administrative employee and discussed upcoming holiday community engagement.

Personnel matters took center stage late in the meeting. Following the resignation of former receptionist Rebecca Duffy effective October 31, the board voted to hire Susan Turner as the new Receptionist/Recording Secretary. Turner is scheduled to begin her 32-hour-per-week position on January 5, 2026, following the completion of her current employment with accounting firm Lauterbach & Amen.

Labor Discussions: Chief Joe Cirelli reported that informal discussions have begun with Local 4270 regarding a contract extension. The local union’s negotiating committee has held at least one meeting, and the administration is awaiting further discussions.

Training Approvals: The board approved several advanced training requests for personnel. Timothy Boomsma was approved for Advanced Fire Officer 1, 2, and 3 courses. Approvals were also granted for Michael Dreger (Chicagoland Heavy Rescue), Ken Berger (Advanced Fire Officer), and Dan Reimer (Advanced Technician Firefighter). Additionally, the training division hosted a three-day Forcible Entry course at Station 1 involving the Illinois Fire Service Institute and the New Lenox Fire District.

Holiday Events: The Village of Mokena is coordinating a holiday theme titled “It’s a Wonderful Life, Mokena!” The Fire District will participate by decorating bells and placing movie character posters in station windows. The district also confirmed it will participate in the Mokena Christmas Parade on November 22 at 5:00 p.m.

Sexual Harassment Training: Attorney John Motylinski reviewed the MFPD sexual harassment policy with the trustees. All trustees present signed a certificate of participation acknowledging their understanding and agreement with the policy.
