Mokena Fire Protection District Meeting | September 2025
The Mokena Fire Protection District Board of Trustees on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, made a major financial decision regarding its emergency fleet, approving a $114,000 overhaul for a fire truck. The board also approved a $35,000 budget to renovate the bunk rooms at Station 2 and renewed a five-year vehicle maintenance agreement with the Tinley Park Fire Department. In other business, the district is moving forward with hiring a new firefighter, planning community events, and facing a lower-than-expected health insurance rate increase.
Hiring Process Advances: Fire Chief Joe Cirelli reported that six applicants have passed the full-time examination for a vacant firefighter/paramedic position. Interviews with the candidates were scheduled to begin on September 10th as the district works to fill its roster.
Health Insurance Increase Lower Than Feared: The district is anticipating an approximate 9% increase in its health insurance costs for the upcoming renewal year. Chief Cirelli noted that while this is an increase, the rate is lower than the district had initially anticipated.
High Turnout for Health Screenings: A recent cancer and cardiovascular screening event was a major success, with 88% of all district personnel participating. The initiative, aimed at early detection, also included 13 spouses and two retirees who opted to take part.
Upcoming Community Events: The district announced its fall Senior Luncheon will be held on September 15th, featuring a “Stop the Bleed” safety presentation. Additionally, the annual Open House and Pancake Breakfast, held in collaboration with the Mokena Lions Club, is scheduled for October 5th.
Station 1 Roof Requires Repair: Following leaks discovered during a recent rainstorm, Fire Station 1 will undergo roof repairs. An inspection by MECO Roofing identified seven pipe boots that need to be replaced at an approximate cost of $1,850.
Monthly Bills Approved: The board voted to approve the payment of monthly bills in the amount of $174,999.45.
Staff Training Approved: Trustees approved training requests for three staff members to enhance their skills. Adam Meyer will attend Emergency Vehicle Technician training, Brian Crabtree will attend a Designated Infection Control Officer course, and Keyla Darwent will participate in the IFSA Fall Seminar.
